stick一般指棍子，與the short end of 併湊一起又是什麼意思呢？
The short end of 由來源自拔河比賽。嬴家手上握著長的一頭，就是指the long end；而輸家則是短的一頭，也就是the short end。於是初期，美國人慣於把任何處於劣勢的稱為the short end，慢慢演變這個短語後面加了the stick，成了今天的the short end of the stick。
Getting the short end of the stick意思就是吃虧，換句話說是得到不公平的待遇。
